Wellenlaufer at Nerezine marina in Croatia

This is the summer vacation area for much of Europe, partly because this part of the Adriatic has a lot of shallow coastal water and is warm and sheltered. Grado and Lignano are both sailing/boating towns with all the resources needed to service and outfit any yacht.  From Grado it is only 8 - 10 miles across to Slovenia.  From Lignano, it is only about 15 -18 miles across to Croatia and its hundreds of islands and some of the most fabulous sailing in the world.  Both of these nations are also very sailor and American friendly.  Moreover, this is an affordable area (sometimes downright cheap).  I think Albania is still to be avoided but there really are not any horror stories floating around about that situation.  Venice is an easy day's sail away. Imagine visiting Venice with your own boat.

Wellenlaufer is a surface skimmer.  She goes with ease where even outboards have to be careful.  She is light enough and shallow enough (under 3 ft).
